Today's Alaska weather forecast from Alaska's Weather Source.
ANCHORAGE , AK - The area of low pressure that led to strong winds and heavy snow through Western Alaska has moved north near Wrangell Island. While a brief lull in the snow and winds is expected, more snow/rain and gusty winds will build in through the day into Thursday.
We’ll also see some areas of heavy snow through the Southeast, with high winds up to 60 mph possible.Dense fog has settled in the Anchorage Bowl this morning, with dense fog likely through midmorning. Take it easy on the roads, as an accident has already occurred along parts of the Glenn Highway. While we’ll largely stay on the dry side today with some sunshine, we can’t rule out some isolated to scattered areas of wintry mix for coastal regions. Temperatures today will largely be a few degrees cooler than Tuesday, but still making a run near freezing for inland areas. Coastal regions have seen some of the warmest afternoons, where highs will climb into the upper 30s. Heading into the evening hours and through Thursday, light snow showers will lift north across Southcentral. While snow amounts will remain fairly light, we could see some heavier snow through Turnagain Pass and higher elevations. Be safe on the roads, as warming temperatures will lead to hazardous roads at times. Snow chances stay through Friday, with cooler weather to follow. We’ll end the week with highs in the 30s, before temperatures take a downward turn. While cooler weather is expected this weekend and into next week, temperatures will largely remain near or slightly below seasonal values. It’s possible that by Thanksgiving, we’ll see highs remaining in the low to mid-20s across Southcentral and slightly warmer weather for the coast.Areas of high winds and heavy snow are expected for the Southeast through today, with the best chance for snow along the northern reaches of the panhandle. Both Haines and Skagway remain under winter weather alerts, with five to six inches of snow accumulation looking likely. Snow could be heavy at times, reducing visibility and leading to some hazardous roads across the region. Areas near Sitka and through the Southern Panhandle remain under a high wind warning, with winds today gusting as high as 60 mph. The winds will likely carry on into the evening hours, so some power outages and downed trees will be possible. Expect heavy rain to inundate areas of Southeast through the close of the week, with a chance we could see some localized areas of wintry mix. This comes as overnight lows flirt with freezing across the Southeast, leading to a period of a few hours where a rain/snow mix is possible. Regardless of precipitation type, temperatures do cool off by the weekend. This will lead to a better return to some snow in the forecast. Highs by this weekend and into early next week will drop into the mid to upper 30s, supporting some snow chances across the panhandle.Despite the seemingly warm conditions, afternoon highs have been near or slightly below seasonal values for many areas of the Interior this week. The only exception is for far southern reaches near the Alaska Range, where southerly to southeasterly flow has led to warming. Areas from Delta Junction through the Denali Borough could see highs climbing well into the 20s today, while the rest of the Interior stays in the single digits and teens. While we can’t rule out some breezy winds near the Alaska Range, we’ll continue to hold onto fairly quiet weather. There is a chance we could see some light snow as the week comes to a close, but even then, light accumulation is expected. As the weekend and early next week arrive, temperatures will begin to cool once more. Afternoon highs are set to drop into the single digits, while overnight lows return to subzero values.Active weather across Western Alaska will continue to support snow for parts of the Slope and Brooks Range. The storm earlier in the week has shifted north near Wrangell Island, with another round of snow and winds moving in throughout the day. Areas of the Northwest Arctic Coast, and through the Central and Western Brooks Range, will hold onto snow through the end of the week. Temperatures have been warming each day, with highs this afternoon likely climbing well into the 10s and 20s. The warmest conditions will be through the Central Brooks Range, where Anaktuvuk Pass could climb into the mid-20s. While temperatures trend warmer to close out the week, colder weather arrives next week. This will likely bring some of the coldest conditions that the Slope has seen so far this season. Highs will likely take a downward drop by several degrees for the Slope, with the potential that we could see temperatures dropping well below zero by the middle of next week. A multi-day storm system continues to impact Western Alaska, where multiple inches of snow accumulation will be possible. While winds won’t be as strong as they were to start off the week, we’ll still see the potential of winds gusting upwards of 30 to 50 mph. Some of the strongest winds will continue to impact areas near the Seward Peninsula and through Gambell/St. Lawrence. Multiple lows continue to sweep through Western Alaska, keeping temperatures fairly warm and supporting some rain/snow chances for the coastal regions of Southwest Alaska. Many areas that remain under winter weather alerts will see the impacts continue into Thursday. As the current winter weather dies down by week’s end, colder weather will steadily drop back into the region. This will also lead to much drier weather this weekend into next week, with highs likely dropping back into the 10s and 20s.A series of lows will keep active weather around for the Aleutians as the week draws to a close. Currently, two areas of low pressure are leading to some gusty winds, areas of rain and a wintry mix in the forecast. We’ll be watching a stronger low arriving tonight, which will lead to even stronger winds building into parts of the Alaska Peninsula. Strong southerly winds will lead to warmer weather, with the potential that we will see a rain/snow mix for these locations. With the active weather sticking around through the weekend, temperatures will remain fairly warm. Heading into next week, slightly cooler weather and drier conditions for the first part of the week look likely. While an overall warmer weather pattern has been gripping many areas of the state, we’ll begin to see cooler weather leading up to Thanksgiving. The coldest conditions relative to normal will likely be through Southcentral and Southeast, while the rest of the state holds onto highs fairly seasonal. While stormy weather has been in the forecast, things look to be much quieter and drier for a good portion of the state.24/7 Alaska Weather: Get access to live radar, satellite, weather cameras, current conditions, and the latest weather forecast here.
