Several months ago, the One Piece anime finally finished its adaptation of the Egghead arc, and overall, it was a sight to behold. In addition to having some of the best writing in the series to date, the animation was easily some of the franchise’s best and most consistent, and it perfectly set the stage for One Piece’s final saga.
In the climax of the Egghead arc, Vegapunk’s death triggered a video message where Vegapunk would reveal history’s biggest secrets to the world. Saturn was forced to summon all of the Five Elders to stop it, thus prompting one of the biggest battles in One Piece as the Straw Hats, with help from the Giant Pirates, fought to escape Egghead. What Happened In The Climax Of One Piece’s Egghead Arc As Luffy and others fought off the Five Elders, Vegapunk’s broadcast revealed one startling truth after another; not only was Joy Boy the world’s first pirate who fought the precursors to the World Government, but the World Government had also been using a mysterious weapon to flood the world for centuries, turning massive continents into the islands of the present. Before more could be said, though, the Five Elders discovered that the transmission was coming from a Transponder Snail hidden inside Emet the iron giant, so they knocked him out and ended the broadcast. The Five Elders were gaining the advantage, but that quickly faded when Luffy got Bonney to enter a Gear 5-like form with her Age-Age Fruit. At that point, Emet regained consciousness and brought back the broadcast, and while Vegapunk didn’t reveal anything else, he said that the fate of the world would depend on whoever found the One Piece. With Emet on the verge of collapse, he revealed his final trump card: a knot of rope that, when unwoven, released a blast of Joy Boy’s Conqueror’s Haki from 800 years ago. The blast defeated the Five Elders and sent them back to Mary Geoise, and Emet went down happily remembering Joy Boy as the Straw Hats made their escape. How One Piece’s Egghead Arc Sets Up Its Next Epic Story Following Vegapunk’s broadcast, the world was sent into an uproar for one reason or another; regular people were trying to process all the reveals, some of the Marines were questioning if they were still the good guys, and pirates, most notably the members of Cross Guild, were more excited than ever to find the One Piece. Back on Egghead, while the Marines now had control over the island, Punk Records suddenly detached from the island, robbing them of the Mother Flame. As Punk Records floated away, it was revealed that Shaka, Pythagoras, Edison, and Atlas all survived by uploading their consciousness into a new body, and they were last seen contacting Nami’s mentor from Weatheria, Haredas. Back with the Straw Hats, Lilith, the only Satellite to go with them, revealed that she had a way to bring Vegapunk back, despite his death. That instantly raised Luffy and everyone else’s spirits, and the Egghead arc ended with everyone partying as they sailed off to Elbaph, with Scopper Gaban shown anticipating Luffy’s arrival. Why The Egghead Arc Is One Piece’s Best Arc In Ages The Egghead arc is one of One Piece’s shorter arcs, but it still stands out as one of the best. Between the main conflict with the World Government, Kuma and Bonney’s backstory, and the various side stories with Buggy, Sabo, and Garp, a lot was going on, but surprisingly, every story got plenty of development from start to finish. The big standout, of course, was Kuma and Bonney’s arc; not only was Kuma’s backstory one of the most emotional stories in all of One Piece, but every moment with Kuma and Bonney in the present did wonders to bring some palpable catharsis to the story, all of which highlighted how it was the true emotional core of the arc. Above all else, the animation did wonders to help convey all of that, as not only was it the most consistently gorgeous of any arc, but for scenes like Garp’s Galaxy Impact, Bonney defeating Saturn, and Emet using Joy Boy’s Haki, it elevated the source material to a level far above the original manga, as well.
