This Volkswagen was built as a proof of concept. Then it disappeared. We caught up with the wild Golf at SEMA.
in conjunction with Schmidt Motorsport and some radically upgraded parts. Unfortunately, only one was ever built and it was thought to be lost to history—until this year. It made its second appearance at the 2022 SEMA Show thanks to VW enthusiast, Jamie Orr.Jamie Orr is someone you want to stop and talk to if you ever want to learn more about Volkswagen. He's a walking encyclopedia of"Dub" knowledge while being very humble about it.
He, too, was hoping to see this car for the first time but it never made a public appearance each time he showed up. But Orr befriended many on the staff of the Volkswagen Auto Museum and wasn't afraid to talk to them about some of the rarer VWs, and his desire to see them in person. Then, one day, he happened to ask if they knew where the A59 ended up. Turns out, they had it the whole time.
"The very first time that I got to go inside Volkswagen's very nice private warehouse," said Orr."It felt like the door was going up in slow motion." Out of the 200 cars that were inside that facility, the silver painted A59 stood out immediately to him."Out of respect, I wouldn't touch a car's paint," he told us,"but, I quietly touched the headlight just to make sure that it was real.
Volkswagen Classic's mission is to get some of these rare and historic Volkswagen models in the hands of journalists and social media so people can learn all about the unknown history of the brand. All of their cars are in running condition and are made accessible to the press to allow us to show you these cars and tell you about our experiences as we're able to drive them.
The body itself is all Kevlar and carbon fiber composites and styled like the Mark III Golf, but with much wider haunches like the original Rallye. To match its intended rally racing version, modifications like raised strut towers, Kevlar brake ducts, additional chassis reinforcements, and engine and transmission cooling enhancements were all installed.
