A "flippant remark" about a bomb to the flight crew locked down an aircraft for several hours and closed 3 runways A passenger's offhand comment about a bomb led to a significant delay for Alaska Airlines flight 2123 at Sea-Tac Airport on Saturday, airport officials confirmed.
The flight, which was scheduled to depart for Walla Walla, was halted after the remark was reported to Port of Seattle Police at 12:15 p.m. The flight crew adhered to safety protocols by taxiing the aircraft to the outboard runway, 16R/34L, which is the furthest from the terminal. Port of Seattle Police responded to investigate the situation. During the investigation, two runways were closed, while one remained operational. Authorities arrested a suspect, and all passengers were deplaned for a thorough K9 inspection of the aircraft and baggage. No suspicious items were discovered. The center runway was reopened at 1:45 p.m., and by 2 p.m., passengers were transported by bus for rebooking. SEA said its investigation revealed that the suspect had made a "flippant remark" about a bomb to the flight crew. The aircraft was cleared by 3 p.m. and subsequently towed back to the terminal. The final runway was reopened by 3:15 p.m. The FBI and Port of Seattle Police are currently reviewing the incident and will collaborate with prosecutors to decide if charges will be filed.
