At the end of a trip that started out more poorly than anyone could have imagined and really should have gone better throughout, the“Just winning, man,” Manny Machado said afterward. “That’s the biggest thing is we’ve got to win from here to the end of the season. We’re gonna do whatever it is. I think we’ve been slacking on some offensive things; we’re not scoring as many runs as we want and getting the guys where we need to get to. But it’s all about winning.
They returned home Wednesday night after a disappointing six days on the season’s final East Coast sojourn. The trip began with Friday’s news that Fernando Tatis Jr. would not be joining the team soon , as had been expected, because he had been. The Padres then took two of three from the Nationals, who have the major leagues’ worst record, and lost the first two games here against the Marlins, who are 14 games below .500.
The big first inning came against Marlins starter Pablo Lopez, who shut out the Padres for eight innings in May. Lopez didn’t allow another run but was lifted with two out and a runner at third in the fifth Wednesday having thrown 85 pitches. Adrian Morejón took over for Clevinger, hit the first batter he faced and then ended the inning with two strikeouts. He worked a perfect sixth as well. Robert Suarez allowed only an infield single in the seventh, and that would have been a groundout had his foot come down on the bag as he was covering first base. Nick Martinez retired the Marlins in order in the eighth, and Steven Wilson did the same in the ninth.
