Participants in Mental Health First Aid classes learn a five-step action plan that includes assessing risk, respectfully supporting the person in need, and identifying appropriate professional help, according to the organization’s website.Topics covered include depression and mood disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma, psychosis and substance use disorders.National Council for Mental Wellbeing,
“But obviously people are not handling it,” Tatum said. “If they were, we wouldn’t have so many people dying by gun violence, dying by suicide or being abused.” Eventually, the barbers and trainees realized that undiagnosed mental health issues hold their community back. Many of those who took the mental health classes found that they needed behavioral tools and resources themselves, Hoyett said.
