Their findings, published Monday in the journal Molecular Cancer, identified a specific protein called CD55 inside the nucleus of cancer cells and demonstrated it was setting off a response that provides resistance to chemotherapy and makes the cancer more aggressive.

The results may help them identify patients unlikely to benefit from the treatment, the researchers say.
This finding was important because the lab previously showed that CD55 protein acted to provide resistance to chemotherapy drugs in ovarian cancer cells. They also found CD55 encourages tumors to recur and spread in various different types of cancer cells. The researchers say that these pieces of evidence suggest that CD55 could be a target for the treatment of chemotherapy-resistant ovarian cancer that targets the protein CD55.
“Cancer cells can do unusual things ‒ co-opt existing pathways and create new pathways we didn’t know were possible,” said Dr. Ofer Reizes, a researcher at Cleveland Clinic’s Lerner Research Institute who investigates biomarkers of chemotherapy resistance and targeted therapies for cancer. “Once we discovered this new pathway, we wanted to see if we could find a way to block CD55 from moving into the nucleus.
Ovarian cancer is the second most common gynecologic cancer in the U.S. and the most common cause of death. The disease’s vague symptoms often lead to late-stage diagnosis, complicating treatment.
