Virginia honored shooting victims Lavel Davis Jr., Devin Chandler and D’Sean Perry before kickoff. After weathering a storm, the Cavaliers couldn’t weather the Dukes.
CHARLOTTESVILLE — As the first half waned in Virginia’s home opener, Mike Hollins secured a handoff from quarterback Anthony Colandrea, barreled into the center of the line of scrimmage and kept his powerful legs churning until he tumbled into the end zone with James Madison defenders draped on his torso.
Before officials halted play at the onset of severe storms, the Cavaliers appeared on their way to a storybook ending when they moved in front 21-17 on the first snap of the second half. Running back Kobe Pace got behind the secondary for a 75-yard touchdown reception, the longest in the career of the senior transfer from Clemson.
“The emotion was really high,” said Colandrea, who threw for 377 yards to set a Virginia freshman record, completing 20 of 26 attempts with two touchdowns and one interception. “All week we’ve been talking about it, and going out and playing for those three guys, it was surreal, honestly.”Shortly before Saturday’s kickoff, families representing Davis, Chandler, Perry and Hollins participated in a ceremony at midfield that included ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips.
The somber environment pregame gave way to a furious pace in the first quarter, with the teams combining for three touchdowns inside the first nine minutes.
