Ohio Task Force 1 members are now returning home after nearly three weeks of work in both Florida and North Carolina.
The team announced on Facebook their return, also outlining some of the experiences they had in those hurricane-torn communities.
The task force was initially sent to Orlando, Florida ahead of Hurricane Helene on Sept. 24. The Urban Search and Rescue team, made up of 82 members, worked along the Florida Gulf Coast following Helene’s landfall. They then were called to North Carolina on Oct. 1, where the damage from Hurricane Helene was compounded by days of rain and mudslides that isolated communities. The team worked in multiple counties, using boats, search K-9s and specialized equipment search for missing people. They also went house-to-house in some communities to identify damage and check in on residents.
Under the threat of Hurricane Milton, the task force was requested to return to Florida on Oct. 7. to assist again with search and rescue efforts.The team will be back in Ohio at around 5 p.m. on Monday.
