Ohio State wasn't able to finish drives vs. Indiana.

In the second half, with Ohio State trailing by three, it mounted drives that combined for 27 plays, 151 yards and took more than 14 minutes off the clock. Coach Day takes high, humble ground after Buckeye’s decisive win in The Game: Editorial Board RoundtableCollege Football Playoff bracket prediction: Where will Ohio State land after loss vs.

Indiana? It was emblematic of the night for the Buckeyes, who lost their first game of the year and now head into the College Football Playoff off a loss. “Very disappointed, just overall with how we played,” coach Ryan Day said postgame. Didn’t play very well in the situations, third downs were not very good, not very good in the red zone at the end. I thought Indiana played really well, did a great job” Ohio State got down to the Indiana 11-yard line in the second quarter, and kicked a field goal to go up 10-3. And, unfortunately for the Buckeyes, that was the high-water mark of their red zone trips. On their second drive of the second half, they went 12 plays for 70 yards, but were turned away after quarterback Julian Sayin gained no yards on a quarterback sneak on 4th and 1. Ohio State turned the ball over at the Indiana 5-yard line. Then, perhaps with that failure in mind, Ohio State and Day elected to kick the field goal to try and tie the game with just under three minutes left. Jayden Fielding then sent a 27-yard kick, which Day called, “Kind of a chip shot,” wide left and gave Indiana the ball back. “Felt like at that point, let’s just get the three points and get the defense on the field,” Day said. “But we didn’t execute that. At the end of the day, we went down there two times and ended up with zero points.” The Buckeyes’ playcalling in the red zone was perplexing, as they opted to utilize 13 and 14 personnel rather than spread the Hoosiers out with their talented receivers. It cost them dearly, and a shot at the No. 1 seed, as Day and the Buckeyes will now have to figure out what went wrong in the red zone. Ohio State’s offensive line wasn’t good, and it struggled to get a true rhythm going offensively all night long. But the red zone issues were what decided the game, and why Indiana is college football’s No. 1 team.Andrew Gillis covers Ohio State football and recruiting for Cleveland.com.
