Ohio State is reportedly hiring former Samford, Auburn and Troy assistant Thomas Morton as its assistant tight ends coach.
According to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz, the Buckeyes are adding Samford quarterbacks coach Thomas Morton as an assistant tight ends coach. Morton becomes the third new offensive assistant Ryan Day has hired in 2026, joining wide receivers coach Morton, whos viewed in the coaching space as an up-and-coming offensive mind, was quarterbacks coach at Samford this past season after previously working at Auburn and Troy.
Morton comes to Columbus after serving as Samford’s quarterbacks coach in 2025. Prior to that, he spent the 2024 season as an offensive analyst at Auburn and worked as a graduate assistant at Troy in 2023. He also logged two seasons with the Tigers as an offensive analyst in 2022 and a player analyst in 2021. A native of Niceville, Florida, Morton played quarterback at Southern Miss, appearing in one game as a redshirt junior in 2019 before graduating in 2020. Morton replaces Wendy Laurent as Ohio State's assistant tight ends coach. The former Penn State offensive lineman and graduate assistant left the Buckeyes this offseason after landing a full-time tight ends coaching position at Old Dominion.
