Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose's home was visited by local, state, and federal officials, including hazmat and bomb detection units, after he opened a suspicious envelope containing a white powder. The powder was later determined to be benign. LaRose expressed concern about the impact on his family, particularly his three young daughters.
Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose said his wife was putting his children to sleep when he opened a suspicious envelope . Local, state, and federal officials, including hazmat and bomb detection units, went to the secretary's home after 10 p.m. on Sunday. 'I started opening the mail; that’s what you do when you are gone for a couple of days, and that’s when I found what I found,' he told reporters Tuesday. 'My biggest concern about this is as a father,' LaRose said.
'I have a 9-year-old, an 11-year-old and a 13-year-old. I had to have a conversation with them at midnight on Sunday about why someone would do such a thing. That's a lot of growing up really fast for three little girls.' He said his children went to a neighbor's house as law enforcement investigated. A field test and later lab results showed the powder to be benign. 'My first concern is about my family and three little girls had to get rousted out of bed at 10:30 at night because someone thought that was a way to make a political statement. That’s wrong.' A suspicious envelope was intercepted before it reached him. He was one of 15 election officials across the country who were targeted by similar threats. 'Every time someone attempts to engage in that type of activity, we need to decry it. It’s unacceptable. We solve our differences at the ballot box. Not the mailbox in this case,' LaRose said
