A controversial bill aimed at increasing parental involvement in their children's education in Ohio is facing scrutiny and awaiting the governor's decision.

A contentious 'Parent's Bill of Rights' is now awaiting Governor Mike DeWine's decision after being passed Wednesday night by the Republican majority at the Ohio Statehouse. The bill, which aims to inform parents about significant changes in their children's mental, emotional or physical health, has sparked debate among lawmakers. Supporters of the bill argue that it is designed to foster open communication between parents and schools. 'The whole bill, if you've read it, is not about sexuality.

It's about keeping parents informed, keeping parents informed about their mental status,' said State Rep. Sara Carruthers, a Republican from Hamilton. 'You know, some kids don't. You know they have they have learning problems. They have some mental issues.' However, critics, including some Republican lawmakers, contend that the bill unfairly 'outs' students' sexuality by requiring schools to inform parents of changes in a child's gender identity. The bill also prohibits school staff from encouraging students to withhold such information from their parents. 'They could lose their license, they could be fired, they could be sued. This bill is horrible -- I mean, it's basically making a teacher or counselor play a law enforcement officer.' In addition to these provisions, the bill mandates that public schools share any material with 'sexuality content' in advance, allowing parents to opt out. It also includes rules for students to leave school for religious instruction. Governor DeWine has ten days to decide whether to sign the bill into law. The outcome remains uncertain, and the public awaits his decision
