Keith McCarty of Mount Orab served in the United States Navy for four years, and his father was a lifetime warrant officer in the U.S. Army.
CINCINNATI -
McCarty is now a traveling nurse and occasionally files for unemployment between contracts. But he found out last week that he couldn't use that USAA account for his benefits when he filed for unemployment. The Ohio General Assembly passed a law in 2023 that requires those unemployment recipients wanting a direct deposit to have an account with a bank that has a physical location in the state.
A Ohio Jobs and Family Services spokesman referred questions to the state lawmakers who passed the original bill. One of those lead sponsors, State Senator Bob Hackett, -London, wasn't available for an on-camera interview on Thursday. But he told Local 12 by phone that the new rule came out of recommendations from a task force put together by Governor Mike DeWine.
