Ohio officials are investigating a possible outbreak of avian flu (HPAI) after finding dead wild birds in multiple counties. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is testing samples to confirm the presence of the virus.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources collected and submitted samples from several dead wild birds to test for the presence of avian flu , also known as highly pathogenic avian influenza ( HPAI ). The Ohio Division of Wildlife suspects the virus in dead birds from Auglaize, Erie, Huron, Lucas, Mercer, Montgomery, Richland, Sandusky, and Warren counties. The affected species include Canada geese, trumpeter swans, and one mallard. The U.S.
Department of Agriculture’s National Veterinary Services Laboratory will test the birds to confirm the presence of the virus. The Division of Wildlife encourages Ohioans to report sick or dead wild birds by calling 800-WILDLIFE (945-3543). The state isolated the farm and quarantined the birds until they could be 'depopulated.' There are no reports of humans infected with the virus in Ohio. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported the nation's first severe human case of HPAI in late December. The patient was a 65-year-old man with underlying health conditions who had contact with sick or dead chickens from a backyard flock. The CDC notes that most human cases of HPAI occur in people who work closely with birds
