Over 931,000 commercial-layer chickens in Darke County, Ohio, have tested positive for avian influenza. The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) confirmed the outbreak and stated that the disease has not been transmitted to humans. While the impact on raising livestock is significant, the ODA assures that products remain safe for human consumption. The CDC warns about the potential for mutations that could lead to a pandemic and urges urgent action to prevent its spread.

DARKE COUNTY, Ohio — Nearly 1 million chickens in a county in western Ohio have tested positive for avian influenza, according to multiple reports.the Ohio Department of Agriculture has confirmed 931,302 commercial-layer chickens had bird flu . The National Veterinary Services Laboratory detected the disease last week, WDTN reports. The ODA is not releasing information on which farms the disease was found.

“The farmers, the ones that are producing livestock, they realize they have a problem in a barn pretty quick,” Brian Baldridge, director of the ODA,. “All of a sudden, they have got birds that are passing, birds that are just not acting right, they’re not eating, and all those things and that’s immediately when they start testing.”

The ODA says there are no recorded cases in Ohio of the avian flu being transferred to a human and that the impact of the disease has been to raising livestock. “Products are very safe,” Baldridge tells WSYX.to humans from avian flu “remains low.” However, the CDC warns that the spread of bird flu needs to be addressed.

“The longer this virus circulates unchecked, the higher the likelihood it will acquire the mutations needed to cause a pandemic. We need to act urgently to prevent this scenario,” Dr. Les Sims of the CDC said in a statement.
