An Ohio House committee amended a bill that, when originally introduced, would have required more transparency for private schools that accept taxpayer-funded scholarships.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - An Ohio House committee has gutted a bill that would have required more transparency for private schools that accept taxpayer-funded scholarships, allowing for parents to have more information when deciding where to send their children to school.

Manning said she and Seitz are fiscal conservatives who felt there should be more transparency in private school reporting requirements. They devised the idea of the bill themselves. It didn’t come from another state or from public school advocates, she said, in an attempt to set the record straight after lobbyists made general comments about how the bill was anti-school choice or was written by public school advocates.

The bill applies to private schools accepting the Cleveland scholarship, for all students who live in Cleveland Metropolitan School District boundaries; traditional EdChoice, for students in the boundaries of low-performing public schools; and Ed-Choice expansion, which began as a program for lower-income Ohioans and now includes at least partial scholarships for all incomes. When lawmakers made Ed-Choice expansion available to all families last year, costs ballooned to nearly $1 billion.

Part of the bill that remains despite the amendment is a requirement for private schools to report their capacity limits and enrollment procedures. including Laurel School, in Shaker Heights and Geauga County, and Hawken School, which has locations throughout northeast Ohio. “But it does give some information to parents to be able to make decisions about where they want to send their kids to school,” she said. “I don’t know if you have an answer to this question, but what should be available to everybody in order to make those decisions?”“The admissions process at an independent school is very personal, he said. “It’s also not just a matter of filling out an application and sending a check and getting admitted to the school. There’s a lot that goes into it.
