Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has presented a comprehensive budget proposal for fiscal years 2026 and 2027, emphasizing investments in children, families, the economy, workforce development, and education.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine unveiled his budget proposal for fiscal years 2026 and 2027, slated to take effect on July 1, 2025. Governor DeWine emphasized that his budget prioritizes Ohio 's future generations and economic prosperity. The proposed budget exceeds $108 billion for fiscal year 2026 and rises to over $110 billion for fiscal year 2027, reflecting a significant increase from the previous fiscal year's budget of over $105 billion.
DeWine's proposal focuses on key areas such as children, the economy, workforce development, and higher education. He highlighted the importance of supporting families, stating: 'Our children are our future. Our families are the foundation of that very future. We must provide families with the help that they need to raise their children.' A key component of the budget is a proposed child tax credit for full-time working parents, offering a $1,000 credit per child aged six and younger. This initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden on families and address the workforce challenges posed by reduced work hours among parents with young children.Furthermore, the budget includes investments in rural and border county housing development and Ohio's roadways, reflecting DeWine's commitment to bolstering local communities. He proposes increasing the state's share of revenue allocated to the Local Government Fund and Public Library Fund. To generate additional revenue, DeWine proposed increasing the sports gaming tax from 20 to 40 percent, with the proceeds earmarked for funding improvements and construction of sports facilities and financial support for student participation in sports and extracurricular activities. DeWine also stressed the importance of education, stating that the budget proposal includes support for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library of Ohio and $23.4 billion to support students through school choice programs and the implementation of a school funding formula
