Vance resigned this month to prepare for his inauguration alongside President-elect Donald Trump on January 20th, marking the start of the second Trump administration. The Senate currently holds a slim three-seat majority, making Husted's appointment crucial for advancing Trump's legislative agenda.
Husted will serve until a special election in 2026, coinciding with the midterm elections, at which point the winner will complete the remainder of Vance's term. Vance's reelection would occur in 2028, when Husted's successor would also have to run. DeWine announced his decision during a press conference on Friday afternoon, stating that Husted's economic experience was a key factor in his selection.
