Gov. Mike DeWine had also weighed whether to appoint Vivek Ramaswamy, the tech entrepreneur from Ohio and former 2024 presidential candidate.

DeWine told reporters that he spoke with Donald Trump earlier Friday morning about his decision to appoint Husted to the role and that the president-elect was “gracious” and “seemed to be very happy.” The governor also acknowledged that “this is an unusual situation, and it’s, frankly, a very heavy responsibility,” and that several people who were considered were qualified.
The outgoing lieutenant governor described himself as “an America First conservative,” saying, “I will do all I can to help and JD Vance be successful.” He said he spoke to Trump, Vance and Sen. Bernie Moreno earlier Friday about his appointment. Husted initially ran against DeWine in the 2018 Republican primary for governor but dropped out and joined DeWine’s ticket.
Ramaswamy had signaled interest in the seat after Trump picked Vance as his running mate, but he took himself out of consideration after Trump won the November election and named Ramaswamy to co-chair a government efficiency commission. In recent days, however, Ramaswamy’s name had resurfaced as a possible candidate, and The Washington Post reported Wednesday that Trump had encouraged Ramaswamy to take the Senate appointment if offered.
