With two days to go before the first wave of early voting begins for the Aug. 8 election, Ohio elections officials are scrambling to reprint and reprogram ballot language to correct an error made by state officials.
Later on June 13, LaRose’s office provided written instructions to county elections officials that included an incorrect version of the new language.
Some elections officials estimated the mistake could cost the state hundreds of thousands of dollars. “We dodged a bullet, to use the figure of speech, because I know that some counties already had finalized their ballots and produced test decks,” a term that refers to electronic ballot templates used to test voting machines.
What makes the issue easier to deal with though, is that Cuyahoga County only has to produce a single version of the ballot, since State Issue 1 is the only thing appearing on the ballot in Cuyahoga County, with no local tax issues or candidate elections scheduled for its dozens of cities, villages, townships and other local government entities.
Republican lawmakers scheduled the election for State Issue 1, which would make it harder to pass state constitutional amendments, to try to foil an abortion-rights amendment that could appear on the November ballot.State Issue 1, if voters approve it, would amend the state constitution to require future amendments to get a 60% supermajority in a statewide vote in a future in order to pass. That’s compared to the current 50% simple majority standard that’s been in place for more than a century.
Crucially, the wrong version doesn’t match exactly what the Ohio Ballot Board approved on June 12. The following passages that show the differences between the two versions are highlighted in bold text.petition filed with the Secretary of State
