Master Sergeant Tyler Simmons' loved ones welcomed him home to central Ohio at Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base on Sunday. They then traveled with him in a procession to a funeral home in Columbus.
"It was very emotional, obviously, to see your son come off the plane in the casket," said Mylo Simmons."It was bittersweet knowing that he was being honored and known so well," he said. "Nothing that I would wish on anyone.""He did what he wanted to do," he said. "I think Frank Sinatra said I did it my way. Tyler did it his way. He really wasn't supposed to be on that mission. But he volunteered. He was actually supposed to be on the beach. But that was Tyler. I'll do it." Simmons' way left a mark on people. Tuesday evening, Columbus City Schools honored and thanked him for his service. He graduated from Eastmoor Academy in 2015. School board members passed a resolution to celebrate his life and service. "He served as an inspiration to those around him and leaves a legacy of excellence for all," said Board President Dr. Antoinette Miranda."It's overwhelming," said Simmons about the support. "It helps to balance the obvious grief, that burden right now.
