Columbus City Council on Monday night honored Master Sergeant Tyler Simmons, a local service member who was killed in a military plane crash.

Central Ohio communities gathered in grief and gratitude as three airmen killed in a refueling aircraft crash in Iraq were brought home to be laid to rest. was aboard an air tanker supporting Operation Epic Fury when the aircraft went down, killing all six crew members on board.

A Columbus native, Simmons graduated from Eastmoor Academy, where he was a standout athlete. He was also known around the city, including at places like the Skate Zone, before going on to serve in the military as a technical sergeant and boom operator with the 121st Air Refueling Wing at Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base. Council member Nancy Day-Achauer said Simmons’ family was grateful for the city’s effort to recognize his service. “When I spoke with his mother, they were very pleased at this opportunity for the city to honor their son,” Day-Achauer said. “It’s unimaginable what it would be like to lose your only child in any circumstance. And so this is just a way that their son can live on, in the hearts and minds of the community.”The council’s resolution comes one day after Simmons was returned home to Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base, where a procession lined the streets as the Central Ohio community honored him and fellow fallen crew members Captain Seth Koval and Captain Curtis Angst.Day-Achauer said honoring Simmons was especially meaningful to her because of her own family’s military service. “Being from a family that has served in our armed forces, it’s very meaningful to me to have that opportunity to show the city’s respect for those who have died in service to our country,” she said.Simmons’ family was not present for Monday night’s resolution.
