LONDON , Ohio - The Ohio Attorney General’s Office unveiled two major projects Wednesday at their facilities outside of Columbus. Leaders said a new gun range will help police officers statewide improve their training, and a new facility for evidence collection will help BCI modernize its process.
19 Investigates got a look inside the new gun range at the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy’s Tactical Training Center.Attorney General Dave Yost led the ribbon-cutting at the 18-thousand square foot climate-controlled facility in London, Ohio. Leaders said the training for local police will be more realistic, can take place year-round, day or night, and will teach officers not just to shoot, but to think. They can even use vehicles inside for training simulations. The new indoor facility goes beyond a traditional shooting range. “This is important. Why? Because if you’ve got a bad guy with a gun, he is not standing in a carefully controlled lane, standing still and waiting for you to shoot at him. He’s moving around in an open space,” Yost said.“This 18,000 square facility is configured so you can have real-life movement. There’s all kinds of ways to configure this for training and it’s going to make our officers in Ohio better equipped,” he said. Also on Wednesday, the attorney general held a groundbreaking for the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s new evidence collection building. It will be located outside of the existing London BCI location. It will expand storage for the increase in cold cases they’re handling. The Ohio Attorney General’s Office unveiled two major projects Wednesday at their facilities outside of Columbus.DNA needs to be stored under specific conditions to preserve it over time. “I’m really excited about this project. This is going to make all the difference as we go into the future to be able to maintain the evidence from all these cases we’re starting to see developing. You know when I started as a lawyer, we didn’t have a lot in DNA and CSI wizardry. And now it seems like every case got DNA and forensics,” Yost said. Yost said they’re assisting more local agencies with cold cases, and the modernized facility will help speed up investigations. It will have five freezers for evidence and will be able to preserve DNA for about 30 years.
