City Council selects candidates for brief public interviews at April 1 meeting.
The Oceanside City Council has narrowed the field of 53 applicants to 15 candidates for three openings on the Planning Commission. The Oceanside City Council has narrowed a record number of 53 applicants to 15 candidates to interview April 1 for three openings on the city’s Planning Commission.
Interviewing all the candidates probably would take about six hours, City Clerk Zeb Navarro said at the council’s meeting Wednesday. To expedite the process, the City Council agreed to have each of its five members propose four of the applicants for interviews. Their choices were submitted and read aloud at the meeting. Some were duplicates, so the final tally was 15. The names are: Jennifer Jacobs Schauble, Michael Ogden, Graham Ross, Kent Rundle, Emily Frazier, Evelyn Mateo, Joan Bockman, Jesse Abril, Gerold Wharton, Thomas LaCroix, Rasheeda Parr, Alondra Herrera, Henriette Burbank, Robert Casey, and Joseph Ganino. Soon after the selection, Schauble notified the city clerk that she had decided to withdraw from consideration. The general format for interviews, subject to change, is to have each candidate make a three-minute introduction, answer brief questions from council members, then deliver a one-minute summary. The council will make its appointments after the interviews. None of the three commission members whose terms expire April 15 has reapplied for the position. They are: Louise Balma, who has served since 2006; Tom Rosales, a commissioner since 2018: and Kevin Dodds, since 2022. The last commission meeting for the three was March 23, where the group’s chair, Tom Morrissey, thanked them for their service and wished them luck in future endeavors. Balma and Dodds were absent. “They have been a great inspiration, and they have done the city of Oceanside proud,” Morrissey said. Rosales praised his fellow two retiring commissioners and offered some advice for those chosen to take their places. “I would say listen, learn and ask questions,” Rosales said. “Don’t come with a predetermined idea of what the outcome should be. Be open, don’t have an agenda.”“I’ll miss it,” Rosales said. “But it’s time to move on.” The all-volunteer Planning Commission considers matters related to land-use planning and development, implements the city’s general plan, reviews development applications and serves as an intermediary between the public and the City Council.Fourth Padres suitor becomes publicNightmare start for Nick Pivetta, Padres in opening-day loss to TigersShortage of air traffic controllers triggers heavy delays at San Diego airportSDG&E trying to figure out what caused big power outage Thursday night Firefighters should take 1 or 2 minutes to prepare for a call.
