OAKLAND — A 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder after undergoing surgery for a gunshot wound he sustained during a Sept. 24 fatal shooting, police said.
Now, Oakland resident Bomani Bassette-Hairston is in Santa Rita Jail without bail on charges of murdering 36-year-old Charles Wright. Prosecutors have also charged Bassette-Hairston with carrying a concealed weapon and being a felon in possession of a firearm.around 7 a.m. Sept. 24, on the 900 block of Brockhurst Street in Oakland. Police said they linked Bassette-Hairston to the crime through surveillance video, witness statements, and physical evidence.
“Wright walked away from Bassette-Hairston and stepped into the roadway,” Oakland police Det. Bradley Baker said in a probable cause statement. “Bassette-Hairston followed Wright into the roadway, produced a firearm and shot Wright multiple times.” Baker wrote that Bassette-Hairston was wounded during the shooting but didn’t specify whether he accidentally shot himself or was shot by another person. Wright was pronounced dead at Highland Hospital later that morning. Bassette-Hairston reportedly got a friend to take him to the hospital, where he was arrested after undergoing surgery.
