The south suburban community of Oak Lawn went back in time and explored its history by opening a time capsule that was sealed 35 years ago.

NBC 5’s Vi Nguyen reports. The south suburban community of Oak Lawn went back in time and explored its history by opening a time capsule that was sealed 35 years ago. WATCH HERE “It was a surprise to me. While I was here at the time, I was a lieutenant on the police department,” said Mayor Terry Vorderer. “I don’t actually recall anything that went into there at the time.” The memories came back to Vorderer, looking through the newspaper clippings, the magazines, the pictures, the VHS, and other memorabilia that was preserved. The items all tell the story and history of Oak Lawn. “There’s a roster of the policemen and firemen and the employees of 35 years ago,” he said. “It was just kinda sad to see that none of them are here anymore.” The mayor told NBC Chicago the time capsule was stored in this brick wall when the public safety building was first constructed and that the items were dedicated to village leaders, employees and police for their work and efforts. “There was some discussion about why a capsule of 35 years, most are 50 or a hundred, but the reality is it’s nice to have people still alive that still remember the capsule,” he said.“The one thing I thought I had put in there were some pencils, but I guess it didn’t make it in or something when we were doing it,” laughed Minnis.“There’s quite a few changes that have happened, it’s for the better, on some of the stuff, it’s nice to see that, but it makes you remember those things have been that way before,” he said. “But grateful for everything being nicer and newer.” They hope future generations will take something away from this as they prepare for the next time capsule. “You’ll be here,” laughed the mayor. “I don’t know if I’ll be here nor Roger, but we will put it back together.” The village said it will move all of the items to a display at the public library in the coming days.
