A New York Times reader seeks advice on how to deal with a well-meaning but overly religious neighbor who constantly prays for them.
A New York Times reader asked the ethicist columnist for advice on how to handle their neighbor's constant prayers. The reader, whose name was not disclosed, described their neighbor as a 'sweet friend' and 'a caring person,' but said they are 'very religious' and frequently offer prayers, even for minor situations.
The reader stated they've told their neighbor their views on religion and asked them to stop praying for them, but their neighbor insists they have to pray as it's their duty according to the Bible. The columnist, Kwame Anthony Appiah, acknowledged the difference in perspectives but advised the reader that they are not entitled to ask their neighbor to stop praying but could reasonably request they refrain from informing them when they pray. Appiah also suggested the reader could try to accept their neighbor's prayers as a sincere expression of love. Vice President-elect JD Vance responded to the reader's dilemma with less sympathy, suggesting they accept the prayers as a sweet gesture
