A New York Times reader seeks advice on how to handle their neighbor's persistent prayers, sparking debate about religious boundaries and personal space.
A New York Times reader complained to the newspaper's ethicist columnist about their neighbor's constant prayers. The reader, whose name was not disclosed, described their neighbor as a 'sweet friend' and 'a caring person' who is 'very religious' and frequently offers prayers for them, even for minor situations. The reader has asked their neighbor to stop praying for them, stating their view of religion and that they don't need the prayers.
However, the neighbor claims they have to pray, as it's their duty according to the Bible. The reader finds this intrusive and disrespectful, despite acknowledging their neighbor's sincerity. The ethicist columnist advised the reader that they are not entitled to ask their neighbor to stop praying but can reasonably ask to not be informed when they pray. The columnist also suggested the reader try to accept their neighbor's actions as a sincere expression of their affection. Vice President-elect JD Vance also commented on the situation, but with a less sympathetic response, suggesting the reader simply accept the prayers as a kind gesture
