The family said Joel Capellan was on parole. Police said a second man suffered a graze wound.
The man was pronounced dead at the hospital. Jeni Rodriguez identified him as Joel Capellan.
"How can we walk the streets of Dyckman now knowing that our closest loved one was just laying there like an animal and his body was just alone. What was his last words? Did he want someone there?" sister Kayla Capellan said. "My son was known in the community for being helpful, for helping out old ladies with the grocery bags, for being a nice kid," Rodriguez said.
On Sunday afternoon, a peace walk was held. Organizers walked from Upper Manhattan to the Bronx. They addressed the incident.
