The silk and novelist will join the NSW Court of Appeal on August 20

Leading barrister and novelist Richard McHugh, SC, has followed in the footsteps of his father, Michael, with his appointment to the NSW Court of Appeal on Wednesday.He noted Mr McHugh’s mother, Jeanette, had been the first woman from NSW elected to the federal parliament, and a minister in the federal government from 1992 to 1996.

Justice Michael McHugh, KC, served on the Court of Appeal from 1984 to 1989 and as a High Court justice from 1989 to 2005. Richard’s brother, Michael McHugh, SC, has been a NSW District Court judge since 2022. His sister, Giselle, is a corporate lawyer.Mr McHugh was an associate to High Court justice Mary Gaudron and practised and studied in the United States after being admitted as barrister in 1995, He made silk in 2006.“Mr McHugh is a highly regarded barrister and a true generalist.
