Former ICAC assistant commissioner Anthony Whealy criticised the ex-NSW premier for her defiance after losing an appeal over a corruption finding.

Former NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian’s “defiant” response to a court’s decision to uphold a corruption decision against her had further undermined her credibility, a former ICAC assistant commission said.

“I don’t think even today she recognises there was a substantial conflict of interest,” Mr Whealy said. “That’s a great shame because she did a lot of good things as premier. I think this has really undone her reputation in a really damaging way.”Ms Berejiklian said: “I always worked my hardest to look after the welfare and interests of the people of NSW.”The former premier was ordered by the court to pay the corruption watchdog’s legal costs following her loss.

“There was evidence that Mr Maguire pressed the applicant to exercise her public functions in particular ways to support his causes and that the applicant responded accordingly,” they said. Between 2016 and 2018, as treasurer and then premier, Ms Berejiklian was involved in approving or supporting allocations of $5.5 million for the Wagga-based Australian Clay Target Association and $10 million for the Riverina Conservatorium of Music.
