The school doesn’t discourage technology at home for students and expects to integrate computers into the classroom for older students when it expands to high school classes.

COPLEY, Ohio - Northeast Ohio Classical Academy gets ready to begin teaching K through 5th grade students, promising not just a new school but a different school. “No cellphones, no laptops for elementary school kids in the classroom except by teacher request,” said Head of School David Baum, PhD.

“The kids are going to focus on what the teacher’s doing, what they’re doing, books, paper, whiteboards, immediate kind of learning.” The school doesn’t discourage technology at home for students and expects to integrate computers into the classroom for older students when it expands to high school classes. “What I’m very excited about is an emphasis on virtues and the emphasis on being a good citizen,” said Bill Altman, Co-Dean of Students and 29-year veteran of public schools. The school is tuition-free, has to meet state standards, and can draw students from anywhere in Ohio but expects to pull students from a 15-mile radius. Students will wear uniforms and classrooms will be sparse. “Sometimes those first grade and second grade classrooms look like a big, huge rainbow all over the wall,” said Ashlea Bruno, a first-grade teacher and mother of some of the school’s first students, her third and fifth grade daughters. “It’s very distracting, very overwhelming for a young mind so my classroom will look a little bit different. It will be a little more muted and focused on the beautiful work of literature, the beautiful work of art.” “I hope when students come to this classroom,” said Laura Walker, an art and music teacher, “they experience the intellectual breadth and depth of not just art and music as a performance but the history of art and music.” “We focus on what I call good and great books,” said Dr. Baum. “That is, we really want to hit literature hard, in particular, the literature and history of the Western tradition.” In addition to studying the basics of math and English, the school will focus on classical literature and philosophy and will study the bible as literature as well as studying the history of religion. “There’s no way really to talk about the development of the West without talking about the profound influence of Judeo-Christianity when it collides with the Greek and Roman Classical past,” said Baum. Northeast Ohio Classical Academy is non-profit but there are concerns. Akron Public Schools has estimated it loses between $27 and $30 million in state funding to charter schools every year.“They’ll have the best of what the Western tradition has been able to provide to give them guidance so they can ask the right questions and have a few answers to puzzle over for themselves,” said Baum.Woman celebrates 115th birthday as oldest person in the USWarrant issued for Cleveland woman charged with clogging jail toiletMonday morning at Cleveland Browns training camp: What's happening at Greenbrier
