A fast-moving storm system is bringing a mix of snow, wind, and the risk of snow squalls to the Northeast, with travel expected to be difficult due to the hazardous conditions.

A fast-moving storm system is rapidly traversing the Northeast , bringing a mix of snow, wind, and the risk of snow squalls , particularly across the interior and parts of New England. The FOX Forecast Center predicts a few inches of snow from Michigan to Maine, with accumulations exceeding a foot in the typical lake-effect areas of Michigan's Upper Peninsula and downwind of Lakes Erie and Ontario in New York.

This is anticipated due to the onset of lake-effect snow after the clipper passes through. Watertown, New York, is experiencing heavy snowfalls, with 9 inches already accumulated and an additional 5-10 inches possible. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 1 a.m. Thursday. Strong winds gusting up to 45 mph will make travel extremely hazardous. Watertown has already received over 60 inches of snow this winter.Wednesday's commute is expected to be exceptionally difficult, especially in areas under Winter Storm Warnings east and southeast of Lake Ontario in central New York. While some areas like Boston are seeing lighter snow or flurries on Wednesday morning, a brief respite is anticipated in the afternoon before another wave of snow impacts areas along the Interstate 95 corridor and New York's Hudson Valley. As the clipper moves off into the Gulf of Maine on Wednesday afternoon, another round of snow squalls is likely along its cold front. The highest probability for these dangerous squalls will be across northern Pennsylvania, upstate New York, and into northern New England. These squalls have the potential to generate sudden whiteout conditions and wind gusts up to 45 mph. Close to the I-95 corridor from New York City southward, temperatures on either side of 40 degrees will likely prevent dangerous snow squalls. Although flakes may still fall, they are not anticipated to significantly impact area roads.
