An apartment fire in Anchorage displaces 28 families and several people treated for minor smoke exposure.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A fire at a multi-unit apartment building on Centennial Drive forced 28 families out of their homes Tuesday night.Assistant Fire Chief Alex Boyd said firefighters arrived seven minutes later and flames were found on the outside of the building near the electrical meters. Crews quickly put out the fire and helped residents evacuate.
The fire caused damage to the exterior wall, electrical meters, and minor smoke and water damage inside. Power to the entire building had to be cut off, leaving the residents of 28 units without a place to stay. The Red Cross and Cook Inlet Housing worked to provide temporary shelter. Three residents were treated for smoke exposure, and one was taken to the hospital in stable condition for further care.Investigators believe the fire may have been started by a cigarette or other smoking material improperly thrown into a planter with flammable material, but the origin and cause are still under investigation.
The Anchorage Fire Department reminds everyone to properly dispose of smoking materials in safe containers, avoid using planters with flammable material for ash disposal and keep smoking areas away from buildings.
