People living at the High Point North Apartments said they are on day seven of not having power-- Austin Energy, though, said they aren't responsible for people being left in the dark.
Austin Energy said this all started Nov. 20, when a car hit a nearby powerline, knocking it over and causing power to go out for almost 37 hours. They repaired the damaged pole on city property, but now they suspect the damage is comingAn email from Amir Kalantari, manager of the complex, said metal theft is to blame, "Several tenants and people around the property have stolen several of the essential wires needed to complete the work. Twice now."Wire theft isn't a rare occurrence.
The cost to repair it, though, is much heftier than what thieves are making, "The amount that it costs to replace it is in the thousands, maybe even $10,000 because not only do you have the labor costs but the material costs," said Ozzy Alaniz, Lead Investigator for AT&T Metal Theft Crimes. Tenants of the High Point North said management isn't acting quickly enough, "For seven days, has had families, seniors, disabled individuals, people with mental health issues, living in the dark with no lights," said Nunley.
