A highly contagious stomach bug called norovirus is experiencing a significant spike in cases across the nation. Learn about its transmission, symptoms, and how to prevent infection.

The common stomach bug , norovirus, is highly contagious and spreads through surfaces and the air in tiny droplets of vomit. People can catch it every year because it mutates. Symptoms , including vomiting and diarrhea, begin 12 to 48 hours after exposure and last about 1 to 3 days. Even after recovering, infected individuals can be contagious for two more weeks. The virus spreads through direct contact, contaminated surfaces, and food or liquids.

Shellfish, like oysters and clams, can also spread the bug. Most people fully recover, but it can cause several days of misery. Severe dehydration is a risk, especially for children and the elderly, due to fluid loss from vomiting and diarrhea. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms with oral rehydration solutions like Pedialyte to restore fluids and electrolytes
