Above normal temperatures and rainfall are favored in Alabama.
from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is officially here. And to the surprise of probably nobody, it’s going to be warm in the South.Yes, that’s mostly true. Most days during the spring here in Alabama are warm, if not downright hot. Sure, you can get some cooler days from late March into April, but it’s harder to get those cool days in late April, May and June.Montgomery’s average high temperature in April is 79°. In May that number jumps to 86°.
Some occasional below average days will almost certainly mix in because that’s how weather works. However, most days -- especially starting in late April -- will be in the 80s and 90s.On the precipitation front, above normal rainfall is favored across the Southeast during the spring season. All of Alabama actually finds itself in that category. That doesn’t mean every single day will be wet and stormy.
The outlook also doesn’t say which month -- or months -- will be wetter than normal. April, May and June could all be wetter than normal, or just one or two of them could be wetter than normal. This is where these outlooks get a little murky. Montgomery’s average monthly rainfall in April and May is just below four inches. In June we average just over four inches of rainfall. That places each of these spring months in the middle of the pack when it comes to which months are the wettest in Central Alabama.
Based on the outlook from NOAA, I’d plan on seeing plenty of opportunities for rain and thunderstorms with a good helping of dry days in the mix. Of course it’s severe weather season in Alabama, so any time we talk thunderstorms in the forecast it’s possible that severe weather could be involved.
