Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill has declined to file charges in a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred in early 2024. On March 17, 2024, officers from the Taylorsville Police Department shot and killed 33-year-old Foueti Tupou Afeaki after he allegedly brandished a gun during a conversation with officers. The District Attorney's Office announced on Friday that it would not be filing criminal charges against the officers involved in the shooting.
The incident began when a man called 911, reporting that his son, Afeaki, was threatening to kill his family. Upon arriving at the residence, officers located Afeaki in the garage. According to court documents, Afeaki stated that he wasn't going anywhere. Police determined that Afeaki had outstanding misdemeanor warrants and decided to arrest him. Three officers approached Afeaki in the garage. Court documents indicate that Afeaki remarked that there were too many officers in the garage. As the officers advanced, Afeaki pulled a gun from behind a blanket. The officers immediately opened fire. Afeaki was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead
