A deep, experienced San Diego State team faces Ohio State in the Maui opener, then could get No. 14 Arizona on Tuesday and possibly another Top 15 opponent on Wednesday
Coach Brian Dutcher was talking to his players Friday ahead of their trip to the Maui Invitational, searching for motivation after slogging through practice the day before. Anyone who didn’t go hard, he warned, would be seated with the staff’s children for the 5½-hour charter flight Saturday. The laughs stop and the business starts for the No.
It’s rare for players to get two trips to the Maui Invitational, where NCAA rules preclude teams from appearing more than once every four years. The NCAA decision to grant an extra “COVID” season of eligibility, however, means SDSU has three here: Aguek Arop, Nathan Mensah and Adam Seiko. They’re climbing a weight class, but not weight classes. Ohio State is climbing weight classes, facing Robert Morris, Charleston Southern and Eastern Illinois — Kenpom ratings of 289, 323 and 352 — with six freshmen and four transfers.
But the Buckeyes are jumping in the cold water, not the balmy Pacific a few steps from their Ka’anapali hotel, while still trying to figure out who can do what after losing 86 percent of last season’s scoring.
