San Diego State has several explosive plays — scoring on 51- and 49-yard runs and a 30-yard pass — on the way to 34-10 victory over New Mexico

New Mexico came into Friday night’s game against San Diego State in the midst of a seven-game losing streak, with an AWOL offense and redshirt freshman quarterback CJ Montes making his first start of the season.

• Running back Kenan Christon’s 49-yard touchdown run three minutes into the second half that provided a 28-10 lead. SDSU piled up 459 yards in total offense against New Mexico. And — get this — the passing game led the way once again. The Aztecs started fast, needing just six plays to move 87 yards downfield. The big chunk came on Mayden’s 51-yarder to Shaw over the middle.

But SDSU opened the second quarter with another long drive — this one nine plays for 91 yards — and another long pass play. But just when SDSU thought it would take control, New Mexico’s defense stepped up again. The Aztecs went for it on fourth-and-1 at the New Mexico 30, and Armstead was tackled for a 1-yard loss.

New Mexico made it 21-10 with a 39-yard field goal as time expired in the first half. That was more offense than the Lobos — ranked 129th in the nation in scoring offense with 14.7 points a game — mustered in their previous four games.
