Nikon introduces the Coolpix P1100, a superzoom camera featuring an unprecedented 125x optical zoom lens, targeting bird watchers and enthusiasts seeking extreme magnification. The camera boasts a compact design with a 16.79-megapixel sensor and advanced features like Dual Detect Optical VR for image stabilization, 4K video recording, and a vari-angle LCD monitor.

Nikon has announced the Coolpix P1100 , the latest addition to its line of super-zoom bridge cameras. This new model boasts a remarkable 125x optical zoom lens, which Nikon claims sets the industry standard for its category. The P1100 packs an impressive zoom range of 24-3000mm (equivalent to 35mm) into a relatively compact camera body weighing 3.1 pounds (1,410 grams). The camera features a 16.79-megapixel sensor, albeit a physically small type 1/2.

3 sensor, which contributes to the compact size and extensive zoom capability. The actual focal length ranges from 4.3-549mm. Despite its small size, the sensor has a floating aperture, opening wide at f/2.8 at its widest point and narrowing down to f/8 at the telephoto end. For photographers seeking even greater magnification, the P1100 offers a digital zoom feature, providing an additional 4x zoom, effectively reaching a staggering 12000mm equivalent. However, this digital zoom comes at the cost of image quality degradation. The lens itself comprises 17 elements arranged in 12 groups, including five extra-low dispersion elements and one super extra-low dispersion element. To further enhance image stabilization, the camera incorporates Dual Detect Optical VR, which Nikon states provides vibration reduction equivalent to 4.0 stops at the image center, enabling more effective handheld shooting. The P1100 can capture 4K video at up to 30p, features a 3.2-inch vari-angle LCD monitor, supports timelapses, and offers clean HDMI out. While maintaining a similar form factor and largely unchanged hardware compared to its predecessor, the P1100 introduces several new features. Nikon's primary target audience for the P1100 is bird watchers. To cater to this group, the camera includes a selectable AF-area mode within the Bird Watching Mode. This mode allows users to assign functions previously mapped to the camera's Fn button to the Fn1/Fn2 buttons on the optional ML-L7 Remote Control. Another notable addition is a fireworks option, designed to minimize blown-out highlights commonly encountered during long exposures. As expected, Nikon has adopted the USB-C port for input/output on the P1100. While the P1000 initially launched at $1,000 seven years ago, the P1100 sees a slight price increase. The Coolpix P1100 will be available in late February for $1,099.95
