Nicki Minaj posted a photo of a Trump Gold Card after appearing with Donald Trump.
Rapper Nicki Minaj shared a new photo Wednesday showing what the Trump administration calls a “Trump Gold Card,” which officials say provides an expedited path to U.S. residency, after she appeared publicly alongside President Donald Trump and praised him as her biggest supporter.
As recently as 2024, Minaj said publicly that she was not a U.S. citizen. The rapper posted the image on social media with the caption “Welp...“ following a Treasury Department–hosted event in Washington announcing “Trump Accounts,” a new government-backed savings initiative for newborns. Speaking at the event, Minaj declared herself “probably the president’s No. 1 fan.“ She dismissed backlash over her support for Trump, saying it has only strengthened her resolve. “The hate or what people have to say, it does not affect me at all,” Minaj told the audience. “It actually motivates me to support him more.” Newsweek has reached out to the Commerce and Treasury departments via email on Wednesday night for comment about Minaj's Gold Card. What are Trump Gold Cards? The administration has promoted the Trump Gold Card as a fast-track residency option tied to large financial contributions. A government website launched in December specifically designed for the Trump Gold and Platinum cards confirmed previous proposals requiring individual Gold Card applicants to donate $1 million to the U.S. Treasury, while corporate-sponsored applicants would need to contribute $2 million, in addition to a non-refundable $15,000 processing fee. A third tier, the Platinum Card, is not yet available, but it would allow an individual to spend up to 270 days a year in the United States without becoming subject to U.S. tax on foreign income for $5 million. The website allows potential applicants to sign up for a waitlist for the card. President Donald Trump greets Nicki Minaj on stage during the launch of a program known as Trump Accounts at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium, Wednesday, January 28, 2026, in Washington. Being able to spend the money will not automatically guarantee entry into the U.S., according to the website—something which had not necessarily been clear in previous announcements. Applicants must be eligible for permanent resident status, be admissible to the U.S., and a visa must be available. Under U.S. immigration law, those who receive a Gold Card will effectively be EB-1 or EB-2 visa holders. These visas are usually reserved for those with “extraordinary abilities“ such as outstanding professors or researchers, as well as artists and business leaders, and offer permanent resident status with a pathway to citizenship. Gold Card holders will have to pay taxes, just as they would as green card holders or U.S. citizens, and they would also be eligible for visa revocation if they violate the Department of Homeland Security's rules—i.e., if they are deemed a national security risk. Nicki Minaj's Background: What to Know Minaj was born Onika Tanya Maraj in Trinidad and Tobago and spent her early childhood in the Saint James district, where she and her brother were raised by their grandmother alongside several cousins while their mother worked multiple jobs. Her mother later obtained a green card and moved to New York to attend college, leaving Minaj behind until she was brought to the United States at age 5 to live with her parents in Queens. Minaj has said she arrived in the U.S. without legal status, though both of her parents had lawful permanent residency at the time. Raised in South Jamaica, Queens, she has spoken candidly about growing up in an immigrant household and the instability of her early years. Minaj rose to prominence in the late 2000s with a rapid-fire delivery, colorful alter egos and a blend of pop and hip-hop that helped reshape mainstream rap. After releasing a series of mixtapes, she broke through with her 2010 debut album Pink Friday, which produced the hit “Super Bass” and established her as one of the genre’s most commercially successful artists. Minaj has since released multiple chart-topping albums, including Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded and The Pinkprint, earning dozens of Grammy nominations and a reputation for technical lyricism and theatrical performances. She has also been credited with opening doors for a new generation of female rappers while maintaining a dominant presence through collaborations, touring and a devoted global fan base known as the “Barbz.“ Updates: 1/28/26, 8:02 p.m. ET: This article was updated with new information and remarks.
