Newry woman Geraldine McAleenan is a certified menopause specialist

A Newry woman has told of her personal experience of perimenopause and how it 'hit her like a ton of bricks'.

"And even though it was hurting me so much, I couldn't understand why I couldn't remember them because I've been doing this from I was 18-19 years of age. So I began to panic.." Geraldine then decided she wasn't going to run the Les Mills programmes anymore, because she could then make up her own routines.

Geraldine closed her fitness centre and was later contacted and asked to do online classes, which she says she loved. "I really focused on those three things first, and then getting to bed earlier and then rising earlier. When you wake up in the morning, the cortisol levels are higher and so for a perimenopause woman that's really good because we don't want to elevate cortisol anymore, we want to work with the natural rhythm of the body."

She said: "I got my oestrogen and progesterone levels right first, and because my testosterone was really rock bottom, about a year later I started on that and that was the game-changer for me.
