What will the Jets do in this year's draft?
So they could definitely draft a quarterback later this month. Maybe not at No. 7 overall. But perhaps at No. 42 in Round 2 or No. 73 in Round 3.He offered a terse answer Wednesday, when he spoke to reporters for the first time since the Jets signed him.
Fields is still young. He just turned 26. He was the 11th pick in 2021 by the Bears — and then spent last season in Pittsburgh, where he got benched in favor of Russell Wilson after six starts. Last year was a tough one for Fields. First, the Bears ditched him for No. 1 pick Caleb Williams. And then he didn’t make it past mid-October as the Steelers’ starter. So the jury is still very much out on Fields. Which is why the Jets didn’t want to commit to him past 2025. That strategy could lead to a quarterback draft pick arriving later this month. Still, Fields remains confident, regardless of his uneven first four NFL seasons and despite the reality that the Jets might draft a quarterback. “I know what I can do on the field,” he said. “I’ve been playing this game for a long time, and I know what I’m capable of.” He said he arrives in Florham Park “definitely something I want to prove to myself. My expectations for myself are higher than anybody else’s. I think I’ve been improving each year I’ve been in the league.” New Jets coach Aaron Glenn said at the NFL’s Annual Meeting that he wants to have Fields play more like a traditional pocket-passing quarterback — rather than asking him to run often. During Fields’ first four seasons, he ran 72, 160, 124 and 62 times — often with success. He has 2,509 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns. Now, Fields is excited about the different role Glenn envisions for him. “I did what I was asked to do ,” he said. “I’ve never had a problem with that. I think I’m progressing and getting better each and every year. So I’m excited to get things rolling this year.”Tom Brady is coming soon to a N.J. mall.
