In an interview Sunday, Gavin Newsom gave surprisingly contrasting remarks on former President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
, Newsom was asked if he would be able to continue working with Trump as president if he were to beat Joe Biden in a reelection contest. Newsom maintained that Biden would win reelection, saying that his time in office represents a “master class” in governing.
But in entertaining Psaki's hypothetical scenario in which Trump beats Biden to win the White House, Newsom didn't attack the former president, as one might expect. Instead, he spoke to his ability to work with people he disagrees with. The tone of his comments on Trump was markedly different from the tone he used when speaking about DeSantis. In fact, Newsom didn't even entertain the idea that DeSantis would become president, saying that Trump would “thump” him in the contest for the Republican nomination. He said that the Florida governor should actually wait a few years before running.
Those comments followed other remarks in which Newsom savaged DeSantis, saying he looked weak in his attacks on Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who is spearheading the effortrelated to business fraud. Newsom said DeSantis “parroted” lines fed to him by Trump allies.
