Investigators said 'several' neighborhoods have been targeted.
Newport Beach police Monday warned homeowners to be on alert about residential burglary, especially at hillside homes whose backyard is connected to open spaces, such as trails and golf courses. There has been an increase in residential burglaries, according to the Newport Beach Police Department, as criminals have stolen from"several neighborhoods" in Newport Beach.
The common thread in the recent burglaries is that the homes tend to be located on hillsides, and they appeared to be unoccupied at the time of the crime. Burglars climbed back fences and stepping on trees, patio furniture and grills to get into properties, police said. Then the criminals broke slide glass doors or windows to enter the house, according to Newport Beach police. The thieves made off with jewelry, watches, designer handbags and clothing in the recent burglaries. Some even forced-opened safes inside the homes, police said. Newport Beach police warned homeowners may be particularly vulnerable during weekends in the early evening hours between 5:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. after sunset.Get Los Angeles's latest local news on crime, entertainment, weather, schools, cost of living and more.
