Salt Lake officials have released a statement on the sale of a building and parcel of land for the possible use as an ICE facility on Thursday, March 12, 2026. According to a spokesperson with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a newly purchased warehouse in Salt Lake's Inland Port for use as a detention facility will provide nearly 10,000 jobs, add over $1 billion to the economy, and provide nearly $240 million in tax revenue.

However, ICE was unable to provide more details on how those numbers will play out and who will benefit. What types of jobs will the facility provide?A spokesperson for the agency said they had no additional information to share.Debate intensifies over proposed ICE detention facility in Salt Lake City Margo Schlanger, a law professor at the University of Michigan who previously led civil rights oversight at the Department of Homeland Security during the Obama administration, said converting a warehouse into a detention facility requires extensive upgrades. “Water, sewage, light, medical care, phones, and safe supervision abilities — it depends how it’s set up, whether or not it’s a space that’s capable of being safely supervised,” Schlanger said. Schlanger said immigration detention facilities are governed by a set of federal standards, but enforcement is limited. “There’s very, very, very little enforcement and oversight somewhere between none and almost none,” she said. She added that two DHS offices that previously monitored compliance have been significantly reduced, leaving implementation of those standards largely up to the private company contracted to operate the facility. She said detention facilities require round-the-clock operations, with multiple shifts and layers of personnel. She said even minimally staffed facilities can require roughly one staff member for every five to seven detainees, depending on operations. She said proper training is critical, warning that inadequate staffing or training can lead to serious consequences. “They don’t know how to do the things that they’re being asked to do, and they don’t know what the folks they’re encountering are entitled to,” Schlanger said. She added that gaps in training and oversight can contribute to human rights violations, illness or injury inside facilities. In addition to operational questions, local leaders are raising concerns about the project’s economic impact. In a letter to DHS this week, Salt Lake City officials said the facility could reduce local tax revenue, estimating a loss of about $1 million annually in property taxes because federally owned properties are tax-exempt. 2News also asked ICE whether contracts to operate the facility would be put out for bid, but the agency did not respond to that question.Soon, there will be a new price for those trendy black license plates. The price is increasing from $25 to $50 thanks to a new bill.MORE | Gov.
