Newcomers finding their way in Del Mar jockey room

Ramon Vazquez, Florent Geroux, Hector Berrios all in their first meet at Del Mar

Three of the top nine riders in the jockey standing at Del Mar this summer are new “regulars” at the track.

Vazquez decided this spring to relocate from the southwest to expand his career. His first thought was to head to Kentucky or New York, but when perennial western champion Flavien Prat decided to head east, Vazquez took the I-10 straight for Southern California. “Florent was well-known with the trainers and owners at Del Mar,” Doug Bredar, the agent for Geroux, said Thursday. “But our announcement that Florent was coming to Del Mar was so late that many of the riding commitments for the opening weeks of the meeting had already been made.
