The CREED Report looked into students' complaints of discrimination at the School of Global Studies.
The main entrance to the Newark School of Global Studies on Crane Street in Newark, New Jersey. The Newark Teachers Union has filed a lawsuit to force the state’s largest school district to release a report it commissioned on ‘anti-Black’ bias at thetensions between Black and Latino students and complaints of racial bias and insensitivity that members of the magnet high school’s Black Student Union aired publicly at Newark Board of Education meetings late last year.
The suit, filed Thursday in the state Superior Court under the OPRA law and the Common Law Right of Access, seeks disclosure of the report and “any related investigatory material in connection to the district’s commissioned study and recommendations on anti-Black racism that was reported at its School of Global Studies.”
John Abeigon, the teachers union president, said getting the report released would help ensure that officials adequately addressed the situation at the school. told board members that school officials had ignored or downplayed their complaints of racial insensitivity, use of pejoratives and other forms of anti-Black bias for months.
“One: create and ensure a school culture where racial incidents and issues of race, culture and other emotionally charged topics can be discussed openly and bravely and are integrated into the thematic foci — instruction and learning — of the school,” Santana read. But the summary did not address any findings of specific incidents of bias at the school, their nature or numbers, whether they were addressed or tolerated, or what individuals, policies or lack thereof, were responsible for permitting the anti-Black culture that students complained about.
